Digital Labeling Expansion Starting May 1: What Businesses Need to Know
As of May 1st, 2026, Russia introduces a new stage in expanding the list of products subject to mandatory digital labeling under the Chestny ZNAK (Honest Sign) traceability system. The updated requirements focus on categories that were previously partially exempt — notably, the list of medical devices requiring labeling is expanding, and the rules for certain types of bottled water and dairy products are being clarified. Additionally, new non-food product groups are now coming under state supervision, including selected types of household chemicals and cosmetic items. For manufacturers, importers, and retailers, this means adjusting hardware for printing and scanning Data Matrix codes, upgrading software for data exchange with the monitoring system, and ensuring proper staff training within a tight timeframe. Importers, in turn, must apply labeling codes as early as the customs clearance stage within the EAEU territory. Market participants are required to complete their preparations before May 1st to avoid shipment blocks, suspension of product certification, and significant fines for the circulation of unlabeled goods.
